Home Decor: 8 Tips to Nailing California Eclectic Decor

Whether or not you live in the Golden State, California decor styles are all the rage. In fact, the overall vibe is inescapable on Pinterest. And who can blame anyone? The look is clean, yet not stark. Has a collected look, but isn't cluttered. Is nature inspired, but leaves the crystals and macrame door hangings at home (not like there's anything wrong with those, they just don't belong in this trend grouping). But how do you assure that you achieve this look without going full boho? Keep reading for a lineup of tips on how to get that Cali-inspired look. Full disclosure: there's plants galore.

Check out the full Pinterest board here!

1. White, white, and did I forget, white. THEN add some color.

First – all white walls – maybe an off white. You can add hints of color with the use of Moroccan kilim rugs, bookshelf vignettes, and window coverings.

2. Trending: Select Use of Trends

Californians are definitely ones to hop onto trends (hello Ugg boots when its 90 degrees out!), but this is the place to not hurdle yourself onto the bandwagon. So go with hints of metallic accents, bring some Edison bulbs to the table, and roll out a Moroccan shag rug! Also, big ol' circle mirrors. I'm definitely wanting one right now.

3. Show, Don't Tell About Your Travels

Californians tend to skew liberal, which often brings an affinity for modernism and multi-culturalism. And we're proud of these things. So it's not uncommon to find weird knickknacks or tchotchkes from all over the globe scattered amongst our family photos and books. And speaking of books, if you have them, let them shine. Also, gallery walls count too!

4. Bring Nature In

White walls are made to feel welcoming when complimented by warm honey and maple woods, lush greenery, and organic materials like teak, cork, and rattan. A cool nod to your California roots? A tree stump coffee table.

5. Take A Chance on Me

While rules are great and all, something wouldn't be "eclectic" without a few things that are just a little out of the ordinary. So add a pop of color with a bright chair and bring on that swing chair!

*I've been to the Joshua Tree House. It's truly a special, peaceful place. And look at those swing chairs!

* Blue sofa?  Orange chairs? White leather poof as coffee table? Why not??!

6. Feel and Sit

Okay, I'm running out of cutesy title ideas. Anyway, another distinctly California look is to bring texture into a room. This can be easily (and cheaply) achieved with the addition of a sheepskin throw, cowhide rug, or jute rug layered underneath a colorful patterned kilim rug.

7. Get Low

Big, bulky furniture is not really in this picture. Stick with inconspicuous sofas with clean, sharp lines and taller legs.

8. Modestly Mod

A good idea to keep in mind when going for this look is to balance things like patterns and textures with straight lined furniture. Not only does this prevent a space from looking too cluttered, but mid-century modern (MCM) furniture screams Palm Springs. Which is in California. So you get it. ;-)
